Cutting The Line: Drawing on Ceramics explores the unique material qualities of ceramics as a surface for drawing. The exhibition includes selections of both 2-D drawings and 3-D ceramic works by five artists to show how each artist’s hand and approach to making and drawing is influenced by the physical qualities of paper and clay.

As a malleable material, clay can be gouged, inscribed, and painted to create imagery, and these techniques alter the surface texture and emphasize the drawn line. Drawings can become dimensional when on clay, giving viewers the opportunity to touch and trace their lines.

While the artists in this show each approach drawing in clay differently, their imagery tends towards humor, kindness, play, and cuteness. Themes that are a much-needed antidote during these times of global unrest and uncertainty.

Kent State is honored and excited to show the work of these artists.
